Space ISAC Celebrates One Year of Open Membership
31 Members, Including Some of World’s Largest Organizations to Smallest Businesses, Represent All Aspects of Space Industry, Actively Sharing Threat Intelligence to Increase Resiliency in Space
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, August 25, 2021 — Today, the Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) announced it is celebrating one year of open membership recruitment—allowing space-sector companies and institutions of all sizes to collaborate across the global space industry to enhance the nation’s ability to prepare for and respond to vulnerabilities, incidents, and threats; to disseminate timely and actionable information among member firms; and to serve as the primary communications channel for the sector with respect to this information.
The Space ISAC is the only space-dedicated ISAC with a space-focused resiliency mission made possible through the investment by our initial founders and the intelligence sharing of members at all levels.
Frank Backes, Chair of the Space ISAC Board of Directors and Senior Vice President of Kratos Space Federal, said, “This last year has been a challenging one, however growth in Space ISAC membership has been a good indicator of common interest in securing and protecting our global space critical infrastructure. In addition to the Space ISAC’s 13 founding members which bring a broad scope of expertise to advancing the mission of cybersecurity in space, over the past year, Space ISAC has welcomed 18 general members representing all aspects of the space industry. First year general members include 14bis Supply Tracking, FTS International, System High, Constellation Network, KSAT, WinterWinds Robotics, Thinklogical, Ready Support Services, Raytheon, Boeing, Planet, Astroscale, Synspective (Japan), Envistacom, Maxar, CyberInflight (France), RS21, and Sophinea.
These organizations – representing some of the world’s largest corporations to some of our smallest of business – are involved in artificial intelligence/machine learning; space supply chain; market intelligence; research and development; remote sensing; counterspace operations; space ground systems; launch vehicle manufacturing; cloud and data processing; space lift and launch; missile warning; satellite communications; positioning, navigation, and timing; cybersecurity; satellite and payload integrations; satellite design and development; space mission systems; command and control; nuclear detonation detection; environmental; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; and space situational awareness.
In February 2021, the Space ISAC announced Initial Operating Capability (IOC) and the launch of its member portal and threat intelligence sharing platform. This capability serves as the first of its kind, enabling commercial industry and international space partners to share timely, actionable information about space-based threats. For small businesses, six of whom have joined the Space ISAC, the threat sharing portal provides intelligence and best practices from some of the most sophisticated space-sector organizations.

ISACs are sector-specific, member-driven organizations established by the private sector with support from the federal government to collect, analyze, and disseminate cyber and physical security threats as well as to identify risk mitigation information for critical infrastructure owners, operators, and members to increase resiliency.
The Space ISAC is the only space-dedicated ISAC and is made possible through the investment of its board and founding members. In 2017, the Science & Technology Partnership Forum conceived Space ISAC in response to recognized information-sharing gaps within the cybersecurity and space community. The goal of the Space ISAC was initially to enhance the community’s ability to prepare for and respond to vulnerabilities, incidents, and threats; disseminate timely information, and serve as the primary communications channel for the sector. The Forum shared this vision at the 34th Space Symposium in April 2018. In September 2018, the White House published the White House’s National Cyber Strategy. This strategy stated that “the Administration will enhance efforts to protect our space assets and support infrastructure from evolving cyber threats,” while working “with industry and international partners to strengthen the cyber resilience of existing and future space systems.”
The establishment of the Space ISAC was announced in April 2019 during a session at the 35th Space Symposium and is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, co-located with the National Cybersecurity Center (NCC). NCC serves as the executive, operational, and administrative function of the Space ISAC.
Space ISAC joined as an official member of the National Council of ISACs in 2020.
